Renovation of 5th Floor Mental Health Outpatient
This project was complex because MDM had to manage multiple phases of demolition and abatement in an active patient environment. Due to the ICRA and Health Safety needs of an active patient environment, MDM and its demo and abatement contractor had to set up air tight asbestos containment areas, perform abatement and related demo work, and then reestablish the areas for patient and administrative usage. Negative air flow was imperative to keep the hospital dust free during this 540 day project which took place on the 4th and 5th floors. Mechanical penetrations were planned and executed between the floors and a majority of this mechanical work took place outside of normal business hours. The entire project area on the 5th floor was gutted and received new mechanical and electrical works as well as new architectural and finishes. Although there were 70 Supplemental agreements that added over $500,000.00 to the contract, the project was completed and turned over to Richard Roudebush VAMC on time and without one time extension requested or needed.

Resurface Roads and Parking Lots
This project was a challenge because MDM was contracted to perform a multiple phased resurfacing and expansion to the Department of Veterans Affairs National Acquisition Center in Hines, IL during normal business hours without adversely affecting employee parking and without interrupting the many receiving and shipping functions that the facility undertakes. In addition to milling, resurfacing and paving works ably performed by Rabine Paving, excavating, electrical, lighting, earthwork and landscaping were performed. MDM's crews performed all of the more than 5050 linear feet of curb work. The critical aspect of the project was the phasing with limited interruption to the shipping and receiving. The execution of the phasing plan was interesting because we inverted the phases to accomplish more excavating and milling work in Phase 1 which left more time to complete Phases 3 and 4 where the majority of the shipping took place. Additional items that were added on the contract with minimal time extensions were multiple rail spur removals, additional 250' of storm structure removal and replacement, and subgrade remedial work.

Remodel Front Entrance and Eye Clinic
This project was challenging because all of the work took place in an active patient environment of the busy Iowa City VAMC entrance. MDM and its mechanical, electrical, flooring, and finish carpentry subcontractors performed their work with patients and administrative staff nearby and each phase of the project sectioned off with containment barriers. Negative air pressure was implemented to keep the project dust free. MDM performed rough and finish carpentry along with concrete flat work for the ramps and entry way. In addition to the Entrance, the Eye Clinic was remodeled and a coffee bar and café were constructed. One of the most striking pieces of the project is the woodwork which serves as the corridor wall walkway in the entrance, the desk of the reception area, and in the coffee bar and café.

The cherry veneer with silver accent strips add a classic architectural touch for the entrance. Additionally the curved slate walls opposite the curved Information desk add to the project.
